VISFF announces Q&A With Local Filmmakers After Friday Night Show

A Q&A panel with local filmmakers will be held on opening night of the fifth annual Vancouver Island Short Film Festival.

For four years the Nanaimo Arts Council has presented the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival (VISFF), which showcases the best in locally created short films. This year, for the first time, there will be a filmmaker’s question and answer panel held after the opening night of the festival. The festival takes place at 7 pm on February 12 and 13 at the Malaspina Theatre, on Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo Campus.

“We have some amazing local talent here and I want our audience to see these great films and be able to discuss them with the people who created them” said Johnny Blakeborough, Director of the VISFF.

The moderated Q&A panel will be held immediately follwing the opening night show on February 12. After the audience has watched the films, five local filmmakers will talk about their experiences creating their films and will answer questions about their projects and techniques used.

“I think there is interest in the process of creating short films locally,” said Blakeborough “This is a great way to further our mandate of supporting a local film and video community on Vancouver Island.”

The Festival, now in its fifth year, shows films of any genre or style, as long as they are 10 minutes or less. “Our show is extremely diverse this year and I am very excited about this opportunity to ask the filmmakers about their work. I hope that this can be a major part of the festival every year,” said Blakeborough.

Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at The Nanaimo Arts Council (Nanaimo North Town Centre), Falconer Books (Port Place Mall), The House of Indigo (Commercial Street, Nanaimo) and The Nanaimo Art Gallery (VIU Nanaimo Campus). There will be a limited number of tickets for sale at the box office on the night of the show, starting at 6 p.m.

The Vancouver Island Short Film Festival creates opportunities for local filmmakers, not only to screen their films, but to network with other film professionals and inspire growth in our film community.
