While working in with the unhoused for Victoria’s Existence project, advocate Sinan Demirel met Daniel Morel. Daniel had
made his way to the West Coast after growing up in a violent home in Quebec. Despite the cold winters there, he left home at
an early age, living in the streets. One day, when he was living under a railroad bridge that was known for suicides, he took a
walk across the bridge, pondering his own life. As he kept walking, he noticed something shiny between the tracks. It was a
harmonica. He picked it up, and started teaching himself how to play. He mastered it quickly.
When he first arrived in Victoria, no one knew of his talent. Sinan got wind of it, and encouraged him to play publicly. A
musician himself, Sinan realized Daniel was one the best harmonica players he had ever heard. Soon, Daniel was playing
professionally on local gigs.
Daniel continues to face housing issues, and still yearns to know the meaning of home. As he pulls his life together, he hope
to work with young people who have experienced similar challenges.
