Michael Makaroff - Victoria, BC
Drama (07:28) | 2026 CineVic Short Circuit x VISFF

The story is a coming-of-age centred on Lucas (Jett Klyne – Doctor Strange, Boy in the Woods & 2026’s Malcolm in the
Middle), a high school student grappling with the realisation that he crossed a partner’s boundaries during an intimate
encounter. Opening with a confrontation between Lucas and a long-time friend (Mark), the question is posed of, “What
Happened?”
The film delves into flashbacks that map out the defining moments of Lucas’ adolescence that moulded his understanding of manhood, consent, and power. Lucas’ world is a whirl of after school banter, locker room pep talks, and evenings spent with
friends in dim basements. In these stolen moments, we see the cracks in Lucas’ moral compass—petty theft, secret texts, and
shared indecencies with his friends that build toward an unseen event. These small silhouettes contribute to a patchwork of
the conversation with his friend and his attempt to garner recognition from Lucas of the pain he has inflicted. Each flashback exposes the dangerous mix of societal pressure, male bravado, and emotional silencing that shaped Lucas’ world.
