Celebrating the Legacy of Rich Travale: Film Paragon Award

We are honoured to celebrate the enduring legacy of Nanaimo’s remarkably talented Rich Travale, who will be awarded the Film Paragon Award, an honourary Goldie Award, at the 2025 VISFF. This prestigious recognition shines a light on Rich’s significant and vibrant contributions to our local film community, a testament to his passion and artistry that continues to resonate.

For those who knew Rich, his infectious passion for performance was evident from the start. This early spark ignited a wonderfully diverse creative journey, leading him through energetic performances with the indie-rock band The Papillomas and into the engaging world of short film. Rich has supported, promoted, volunteered, and attended VISFF since its inception.

Rich brought a unique spark and dedication to every role he embraced. Audiences fondly remember his comedic flair in Nice Shoes (2008), a lighthearted look at the mysteries of attraction, and his compelling presence in The First Time We (2014), a dramatic short that rightfully earned him the Most Promising Actor award at the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival. His memorable contribution to Reproductive Cycles, which delighted audiences and won the People’s Choice Award at the 2017 Vancouver Island Short Film Festival. Rich’s filmography also includes notable projects such as Happy Thoughts (2018), and How to Hide a Dead Body, which won the 2019 People’s Choice Goldie Award, will be screened at the 20th Anniversary Program.

Beyond the screen, Rich’s voice was a familiar and welcome sound on Nanaimo’s airwaves for over a decade as a radio host on CHLY. Through his voice-over work, engaging on-air presence, and voice acting for promotions, he connected with our community in a unique and personal way.

This Film Paragon Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the local film scene.  Rich’s lasting impact, placing him alongside esteemed figures in Nanaimo’s film history, such as Ron Bonham, who previously received the award for his dedication, and Shirley Goldberg. Just as Ron and Shirley nurtured a love for cinema in our community, Rich’s talent and vibrant spirit have enriched Nanaimo’s and VISFF’s filmmaking community.

The Film Paragon award will be presented at the VISFF Anniversary Showcase on Thursday, May 1st.
